Just finished adding a few new Helle Knives to the storefront. Several of them really pique my interest.
Helle 36 GT
The first is the Helle 36 GT. This model was released in 1997. While it’s not a “new” knife, its the first I’ve rally taken the time to look at it closely. What really appeals to me is the size of the handle and the aluminum guard.
I like a heavier once in a while but I’m always a bit concerned about wet hands slipping on the handles. And yes, I’ve sliced a finger in the past. The guard on the 36 GT is not only functional but it really adds a nice finishing touch to the overall appearance of the knife.
Helle Raud S
New in 2022, the Raud S (Red Small) is a newcomer to the Helle lineup. It’s a really slick lockback pocketknife that checks a lot of boxes for the outdoorsman. The blade is only 2.17″ long, but combine that with a thickness of .106″ and you have a sturdy tool ready to take on some pretty rugged tasks for a knife this size.
The handle is a nice chunky piece of red dyed birch. I’ve got a fairly big hand and the thickness makes it a comfortable knife for me to use. At the same time, it doesn’t feel overly bulky in the pocket.
Overall thoughts
I like Helle knives. I particularly like their Triple Laminated Steel. Of course the 12C27 steel has been a winner for Helle for years. Their designs are practical and built for outdoorsman. The knives are made to be used and work efficiently. My feeling is most of their knife patterns would meet my needs, no problem.
