Latest UK Knife Proposal

I was going to take the entire weekend off and leave the knife business until Tuesday.   After reading today’s article in the Daily Mail, I had to share this.  John and the rest of my friends in the UK, I am not making fun of you but some of your lawmakers are outdoing themselves with the absurdity of some of their proposals to lower the knife crime attacks in London.

An honest to god, educated Judge made the following suggestions.

Judge calls for 10in pointed kitchen knives to be ground down to a rounded end after hearing three serious stabbing cases in last three months

Here’s a classic example of absolute stupidity.  “I would urge all those with any role in relation to knives – manufacturers, shops, the police, local authorities, the government – to consider preventing the sale of long pointed knives, except in rare, defined, circumstances, and replacing such knives with rounded ends,”

You have to read the entire article to really appreciate it.  Thank God, these comments were made during his retirement ceremony.

Simply grind the point off the knives and watch the crime rate drop.  Your honor, with all due respect, do you have any idea how easy it is to regrind a point on that knife?

Judge Madge said that any blade could cause an injury, but ‘slash wounds were rarely fatal.’

He told the court: ‘It is the points of such knives which cause life threatening and fatal injuries.’

Somehow, I hear a similar tone to the argument that all we have to do is ban the so called ‘assault rifles’ because they’re the guns that cause ‘life threatening and fatal injuries’.  Hell, I have an even better idea.  Why don’t we just ban 55 grain .224 diameter bullets as they’re the most common ones used in the ‘assault rifles’.  Voila!!! Problem solved.
On top of that, what about all the other pointed things in life.  Pencils, screwdrivers, 4″ golf tees, tent stakes, toothpicks, tree branches.   This sounds like a Monty Python skit in the making where all they need to do is establish a Department of Incredibly Stupid Ideas.  Check out the Department of Silly Walks.
This type of commentary from the bench is funny and tragically frightening at the same time.  As I said, I’m not implying the Brits have a monopoly on stupid lawmakers or judiciary.  It’s just that of late they’re putting their US counterparts to shame when it comes to  showing they really, really, REALLY care and want do to something.  Even if it’s just grinding the point off your kitchen knives.  Good Grief!!!!!

  1. There is precedent. In the British Navy it was common practice to have all navvies line up and present their deck knives to the carpenter, who would proceed to place the tip of their knives in a vise and then snap off said tip. The given reason was that this prevented a knife falling from the rigging from harming anyone on the deck below. The real reason was that it would prevent bloodshed in the event of an argument. Most sailors, of course, had more than one knife.

    1. So there is precedent as to the effectiveness of the policy specifically concerning slashing vs stabbing?

  2. Well, in a way. It was actually a thinly disguised and poorly thought out measure meant to curtail the possibility of mutiny on board one of his majesty’s ships, though citing concern for a sailor’s safety made a fine sounding reason. In the short run, however, people being people, it wasn’t effective at stopping either stabbing and/or slashing among the men in general or mutinying in specific; witness the Spithead and Nore mutinies. A futile , knee jerk policy made in fear of and contempt for the common Navy populace that failed because, like the sailor’s rigging knives, it was ultimately pointless. Much like this latest iteration.

  3. Greg, I fear that a lot of supposedly educated people in this country would agree with this judge, so far have the majority of my fellow countrymen moved from the blessed realm of common sense that I fear for the future.
I saw only the other day a picture of the emptying of one of these knife surrender bins. The great majority were kitchen knives and some were even table knives that you would eat your dinner with! The headline was getting the knives off the street, all these knives would be illegal to carry, probably even the table knives! but all would be simple enough to replace.
I feel that we are moving so far away from any sensible reaction to an admittedly worrying rise in violent crime that there is little hope that anything can and will be done to stop it. There has apparently been an enormous drop in violent crime in Glasgow which was at one-time renown for stabbings, I do not know the details of this improvement but doubt that it has anything to do with blunt kitchen knives.

    1. Its just amazing to me to listen to the rationale for some of these proposals. Reading and re-reading the Judges statement to the court: ‘It is the points of such knives which cause life threatening and fatal injuries.’ Resulting in the conclusion that grinding the point off will address the problem? Seriously? I would be embarrassed beyond words to have that kind of convoluted logic associated with my name.

Unfortunately we have the same kind of imbecility here as well. In 2013 a Colorado Senator by the name of Diana DeGette (a Democratic leader in the effort to strengthen US Gun Laws made the following statement regarding rifle magazines. Understand, she’s talking about rifle MAGAZINES.

“These are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now, they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available.”

There was a followup to her comment that was even more ludicrous. “She simply misspoke in referring to ‘magazines’ when she should have referred to ‘clips,’ which cannot be reused because they don’t have a feeding mechanism,” Johnson said.

If you’d like to read the article it’s rather amazing to read how ignorant of the facts the leaders of the movement think. https://www.denverpost.com/2013/04/06/inaccurate-remarks-on-gun-magazines-put-rep-diana-degette-under-scrutiny/

      1. A great article in the Denverpost Greg.
The part towards the end gets to the heart of the matter to my mind, on both sides of the pond.

“She clearly doesn’t know her way around the gun,” Jensen said. “I think (her) remarks highlight the fact that some people believe the only thing guns are ever used for is violence. She’s obviously coming from that perspective. Then there’s the farmer, rancher, hunter who thinks of it as a tool.”

If you change guns to knives then that is the situation here.

        1. No matter where in the world we look, our problems and politicians aren’t so different.
